A former Kent Police officer has been sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to nine sexual offence charges at Lewes Crown Court.

Timothy Neville Ryton, 45, Folkestone, was charged with three counts of distributing indecent images, two counts of distribution indecent videos, two counts of taking indecent videos and two counts of voyeurism at his previous trial in March at Crawley Magistrates Court.

The Right Honourable Judge Niblett, said: ‘To read and hear your chat logs was chilling…

“This case portrays possibly the worst breach of trust I have ever seen.”

The ex-policeman had been in the force for over 25 years before a Greater Manchester Police investigation in Stockport gave information to Kent Police that lead to his arrest on 23 January 2017.

mesaging apps

After Ryton’s mobile phone had been seized it was found to have a private messaging app on it where he had been taking and distributing indecent images from his private address in Kent between 5-7 November.

Posing with the name ‘Hubbabubba71’ the defendant used lewd, graphic and sadistic language whilst posting sexual images and videos he had made on the messaging app.

Head of Public Protection at Kent Police, Detective Chief Superintendent Tom Richards said: ‘Our role is to protect and serve, keep communities safe and safeguard the most vulnerable. Ryton did exactly the opposite and now, quite rightly, will serve his time in prison. “

A spokesperson for The Harbour Centre, said: “The police need to have more checks for their officers, although this wouldn’t have helped this time, we have people in positions of power do this all too often.

“It is despicable that a police officer has done such a thing, we normally hold them at a high standard and he has abused his position of power here.”

Ryton’s movements were cross referenced with wifi connections from the phone used in his crime around the world including Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Rome, Paris and London to link him to his crimes.

The judge handed Timothy Ryton an order to forfeit two phones for destruction and an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order so he will be on the Sexual Offenders Register for life.
